Designer Iuan Kai Fang faced the challenge of transforming an old house into a bright, airy space that catered to the needs of a family wishing to provide their parents with the utmost comfort. The renovation involved retaining the elevated area and infusing it with clean lines that draw the eye to the outdoors. Glass partitions were strategically used to connect private rooms with the public area, enhancing the sense of openness and creating a comforting home environment.
Optimal Care stands out for its clever utilization of a limited area to plan multiple comfortable living spaces. The ground floor serves as the main living area for the parents, featuring a two-story glass curtain in the living room to usher in an abundance of natural light. The kitchen's open layout merges seamlessly with the living room, forming a spacious common area that is both bright and airy.
The design employs linear divisions on the walls to craft a modern texture. A serene and stable atmosphere is achieved through a palette of black, white, and gray, complemented by the simplicity of wood and water mold paint. The integration of external windows and glass partitions fosters a comfortable and breathable living space. In public areas, metal pipes from recycled materials are used as decorative elements and cabinet handles, showcasing a commitment to sustainability.
With a total area of 186 square meters, this second-hand duplex penthouse includes a generous public space with a living room, dining room, relaxation area, and a Japanese-style tatami room. The private quarters boast five bedrooms and four bathrooms, ensuring ample space for family members. The design's unique features are not only aesthetic but also practical, maximizing storage while maintaining a sleek look.
The design facilitates mobility and privacy by using glass to delineate the second-floor bedrooms. This allows for visual connection between spaces, fostering interaction and emotional dialogue among the residents. A library corridor with floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor provides a tranquil space for relaxation and contemplation.
Addressing the safety of the elderly, the staircase is designed with widened steps and integrated handrails. Indirect lighting along the stairs and transition areas ensures safe navigation. The lighting design is versatile, with lamp posts and track lights accommodating various heights and angles, contributing to the residence's diverse style.
Optimal Care is a testament to Iuan Kai Fang's ingenuity and sensitivity to the occupants' needs. This project, which took 18 months to complete, has been recognized with a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024, celebrating its innovative design that enhances the quality of life and contributes positively to the world.
